Combined with the glasnost of the 1980s in the then Soviet Union, the fall of the Berlin Wall meant the “end” of a world and the emergence of a new one. Involving far-reaching changes for the West as well, this downfall of an ideology also made itself felt in literature. The debate will focus on reflections on the totalitarian limitations of that Orwellian world which we all know and which in a subtle way brought many to the margins of existence. On the other hand, there is the necessity to overcome these limitations and a debate on the role that silence and history have often played in countries shaped by ideological systems (which also include Cuba).
